Inter Miami's Diego Gomez creates history as Paraguay shock Brazil in World Cup qualifying

Diego Gomez has been one of Inter Miami’s best players this season, and the midfielder’s stock has now increased tenfold after Paraguay’s win against Brazil last night.

Los Guaranies secured one of the shocks of the international break as Gomez scored the winning goal against the five-time FIFA World Cup champions to register a 1-0 win against Brazil, with the Inter Miami star’s goal a work of art.

With Gomez set to leave Inter Miami for Brighton & Hove Albion in January, the Premier League side have been proven right in taking the risk on signing the MLS talent, who is now an international star with Paraguay.

And it would prove to be a historic result for Paraguay against the South American giants.

Paraguay secure first World Cup qualifier win vs Brazil since 2008

Paraguay’s win in Asuncion was the first the South American nation have managed against Brazil in World Cup qualifying since 2008, with the victory only the third los Guaranies have experienced this century against their continental rivals.

With Paraguay’s last World Cup finals appearance coming in 2010, Gomez will be determined to book his spot in the 2026 edition of the competition in two years time, one that will take the midfielder back to the United States and potentially Miami.

Indeed, the 21-year-old talent has shown this year that he is one of the breakout stars in world soccer after a fantastic season with Inter Miami and now a first international goal for Paraguay against one of the biggest nations in the sport.

And Gomez helping Paraguay to history shows just how important the Inter Miami star will be for his country in the years to come, with the 2026 World Cup a real goal for the Brighton-bound talent.

Gomez could become Inter Miami’s most successful export

Inter Miami have an array of talents who could become top players in Europe, yet with the form Gomez is now in for club and country, it’s hard to look past the Paraguayan as the most exciting of them all.

The 21-year-old has been exceptional for Inter Miami this year, and after his historic goal for Paraguay against Brazil, Gomez could go on to become the Herons’ most successful export if he hits the ground running with Brighton.

Gomez is showing he can compete with the best in the world, and the midfielder will want to show the Premier League that he belongs once his move to the Seagulls is confirmed in January.
