Report: Why Barcelona still paying Inter Miami stars Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are considered two of the greatest players in FC Barcelona’s history, with the pair still thriving together at Inter Miami.

The attackers are two of four former Barcelona stars currently plying their trade in Florida, with Messi joined by Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba last summer with Inter Miami also appointing former Camp Nou manager Tata Martino.

With the Herons also linked with the likes of Sergi Roberto this summer, Inter Miami’s link with Barcelona is only likely to grow stronger in the years to come, with Messi the main bridge between the two soccer clubs.

Yet Messi and Suarez’s affiliation with Barcelona still isn’t over just yet.

Barcelona owe Messi and Suarez deferred salaries from 2020/21

According to AS, Messi and Suarez are still owed their deferred salaries from Barcelona from the 2020/21 La Liga season, along with every other Barca player who took a paycut during the campaign that was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

As a result, Inter Miami’s Alba and Busquets are also owed salary payments from Barcelona, with the Catalan giants in the news regularly in the last five years due to their dismal financial situation and their ways of overcoming their issues.

Although Barcelona are slowly but surely getting out of their financial problems, the European giants still owing the likes of Messi and Suarez’s salary from a season that ended over three years ago is a telling sign for the Catalan side.

Yet given how much the duo did for Barcelona during their incredible spell with the La Liga club, Messi and Suarez more than deserve their deferred salaries even with the pair now far removed from their former home.

Inter Miami have jokingly been referred to at times as Barcelona’s retirement home given the amount former players who now play for the Herons coupled with Martino being manager of the Florida franchise.

Yet this link to Barcelona is something no MLS club has and is one that Inter Miami need to get the most out of, with Messi the key connection between the Supporters’ Shield champions and the Catalan giants.

Indeed, Inter Miami could lure even more Barcelona-linked players to Chase Stadium in the coming years, and Messi will be influential in any such deal should the Argentine decide to get involved with potential moves.
