'The word is': What Neymar actually thinks about reuniting with Lionel Messi and signing for Inter Miami - journalist

Inter Miami made the most ambitious signing in MLS history last year with Lionel Messi, and the Herons could be about to go a step further with the addition of Neymar.

Neymar has been strongly linked with a move to Inter Miami in recent weeks with the Brazil superstar’s contract with Al-Hilal expiring at the end of this season, with the winger only just returning to the field after a year out through injury.

With Neymar recently buying a $26m property in Florida, all signs seem to point towards the former FC Barcelona forward moving to Inter Miami and reuniting with Lionel Messi and friends at Chase Stadium.

And Neymar’s own opinion on making the move could make a transfer a reality.

Neymar ‘wants to be’ at Inter Miami amid ongoing speculation

According to the Miami Herald’s Michelle Kaufman, Neymar ‘wants to be in Miami’, with the former PSG star potentially ready to leave Saudi Arabia next summer when the winger’s lucrative contract comes to an end.

With Neymar in need of a career revival after a year out injured, Inter Miami could be the move that does just that, with the opportunity to play with Messi and Luis Suarez something that could be tempting for the 32-year-old.

Kaufman said on Neymar’s situation: “His contract with Al-Hilal ends in May 2025, so he’s a free agent next summer. The word is that although he’s making $100m, has a 25-room mansion and a private jet, he wants to be in Miami.

“Everyone wants to be in Miami with Messi and all that. It would make sense, mid-2025 he will come here in time for the Club World Cup and in time for the 2026 World Cup, he can build his brand in the US leading into the 2026 World Cup, and Inter Miami will also be opening their new stadium in March 2026.”

How realistic is Neymar’s move to Florida really?

MLS is unlike any league in the world when it comes to roster building, with clubs like Inter Miami capped at how much they can spend on player salaries and how many players can earn over the limit.

Inter Miami’s 2024 Designated PlayersSalaries
Lionel Messi$20,446,667.00
Sergio Busquets$8,774,996.00
Leonardo Campana$722,333.00

With Leonardo Campana an obvious Designated Player for Inter Miami to buy-down, Neymar could become a new signing for the Herons and earn a salary the Brazilian believes is fair if an agreement can be reached with the Ecuador international.

Yet given how big Neymar joining Inter Miami would be for the franchise and for MLS, there’s a real chance that Campana would accept a non-DP contract if the prospect of signing the Brazilian came up.
