Lionel Messi scored for Inter Miami in the MLS Cup playoff first round against Atlanta United – but it was not enough.

Tata Martino watched his side go on to suffer a 3-2 defeat despite the Argentina international’s equaliser in the 65th minute to make it 2-2.

It was a shock defeat for David Beckham and everyone involved with Inter Miami – who were unable to add to their recent MLS Supporters’ Shield triumph.

After defeat was confirmed for Inter Miami against Atlanta United, Landon Donovan noticed Lionel Messi do something that he doesn’t approve of one bit.

Landon Donovan criticises Lionel Messi for walking straight down the tunnel

Whether you win, lose or draw, you should always shake hands with the opponent and show appreciation to your supporters before leaving the pitch.

However, Messi was so frustrated to lose against Atlanta United, the South American stormed straight off the field and down the tunnel – ignoring both the Inter Miami fans and the opposition players.

Speaking about the situation to Tim Howard on the Unfiltered Soccer podcast, Donovan said: “I don’t like that. Just shake their hands and say congratulations. Messi walked right off the field. Maybe in the locker room they came out and said congrats or whatever, and by the way, your fans are out there too, at least congratulate them on a great season and thank them for all the support they’ve had.”

The 42-year-old is spot on.

Inter Miami No.10 must set an example

Anybody who has played football at any level will know how easy it can be to storm off the pitch after a disappointing defeat, although Messi is an example to millions across the planet, and should have set a better example in all honesty.

Inter Miami were already facing question marks over their discipline after Brad Guzan was shoved into the net following the Argentine’s headed equaliser, so to see their captain dismiss everybody and leave the pitch as soon as possible doesn’t help improve their image one bit.
