Inter Miami have been quick to make wholesale changes since their play-off elimination, with Javier Mascherano replacing Tata Martino as manager.
The former Argentina U-23 head coach has succeeded his fellow countryman in the hot seat at Chase Stadium, with David Beckham excited about what Mascherano can bring to the table for Inter Miami next season.
With Mascherano himself also excited about taking on the Inter Maimi job, the Herons are about to embark into a brave new world with the former FC Barcelona defender at the helm, with Lionel Messi and company set for a big 2025.
Yet the decision to bring in Mascherano might have been planned for some time.

Taylor Twellman says he heard Mascherano to Inter Miami rumors in September
Speaking on MLS’s official YouTube channel, pundit Taylor Twellman shared that he had heard Mascherano’s name being linked with Inter Miami in late September, way before the Herons were eliminated from the MLS play-offs.
Indeed, Inter Miami seemingly had a plan in place all along to replace Martino with Mascherano, and the Herons putting their confidence in the 40-year-old is a big sign of where the club’s owners want to take the franchise next season.
Twellman said when discussing Inter Miami’s managerial change: “The reports are for personal reasons, and I think there’s some truth to that, but I also think that there’s a little proof in the pudding when you look somewhere else.
“If we’re to believe that this was his decision, then how come they came so quickly to Javier Mascherano? So much so, I heard this rumor in late-September that this was in the works.”

Inter Miami are putting a lot of faith into Mascherano next season
Mascherano is heading into uncharted territory in his managerial career by taking on his first club role at Inter Miami, a task that the former Argentina international seems up for.
Javier Mascherano’s manager record | Games managed | Wins | Draws | Losses | Win percentage |
Argentina U-20 | 29 | 18 | 3 | 18 | 62.1% |
Argentina U-23 | 21 | 10 | 7 | 4 | 47.6% |
Total | 50 | 28 | 10 | 12 | 56.0% |
Yet as per Mascherano’s managerial record across Argentina’s youth teams, the numbers aren’t exactly jaw-droppingly amazing, with the former Barcelona defender just over 50% when it comes to his win percentage.
Indeed, Inter Miami are putting a lot of faith into Mascherano next season, and the Herons will hope that the Argentine coach can take this squad to the next level after an impressive showing from Martino this year.
