Who is Michael Appiah? Inter Miami’s second MLS SuperDraft pick for 2025

Inter Miami selected striker Michael Appiah with their second pick in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft in a move that was much needed.

The Herons selected midfielder Bailey Sparks with their first selection in what became Javier Mascherano’s first addition to his Inter Miami squad.

Appiah was selected in the third round after Inter Miami decided to trade away their first-round slot to Los Angeles FC.

Mascherano’s side acquired $50,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM), as well as a natural second-round pick in the MLS SuperDraft 2026 from Los Angeles FC.

The 18-year-old striker, Appiah, will be looking forward to learning from one of the very best finishers in the game, Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan recently signed a new contract with the side.

What Appiah will bring to the Inter Miami side

It was no secret that Inter Miami was in desperate need of a striker following the departure of Leo Campana to the New England Revolution.

The 18-year-old now becomes just the second central striker in the Inter Miami squad ahead of the 2025 MLS season.

The Florida International University student had a career-best season in 2022 when he bagged 17 goals and seven assists for the Multnomah Lions.

The Ghana-born attacker was named to the 2023 NAIA Honorable Mention All-America team.

He will be looking to make an impact in Inter Miami’s first pre-season friendly against Mexican champions Club America on January 18.

For every player selected to play in the MLS, it’s a dream come true and for Appiah, it is no different.

The youngster will be able to learn his trade alongside some of the very best in the world including Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Reacting to his selection by Inter Miami Appiah said: “It is truly a dream come true for someone like me, coming from a small village in Ghana, to have the opportunity to play for Inter Miami CF. The journey has been shaped by years of hard work, sacrifice, and the unwavering support of my family, coaches, and the community – all of which have played a vital role in helping me reach this significant milestone.”

Appiah’s coach at Florida International University, Kyle Russell, was also full of pride for the striker.

He said: “We are so proud and excited for Mikey. He has a lot of tools to offer at the next level. Inter Miami are a fantastic organization and they are getting a fantastic person and player!”

Inter Miami’s stars are expected to get back to training in January and Appiah will be keen to get going with his new star-studded teammates.
