Inter Miami have made a number of exciting signings this January, with Telasco Segovia arguably the pick of the bunch.
The Venezuela international has made quite a name for himself in Portugal since joining Casa Pia in 2023, with the 21-year-old attacking midfielder becoming a full international with La Vinotinto and now winning a move to Javier Mascherano’s side.
With Segovia excited to join Inter Miami this January, the young South American will add a lot of value to the Herons’ squad heading into the new season, with the reigning Supporters’ Shield champions now working to add Santiago Simon from River Plate.
It’s an exciting time to be an Inter Miami fan heading into the 2025 season, and Mascherano has now shared his thoughts on why Segovia was brought in this January.

Mascherano impressed with Segovia having faced him ‘many times’
Speaking to the press this week, the former FC Barcelona defender shared how he was impressed with Segovia having faced the midfielder multiple times during his stint as Argentina’s U-20 and U-23 manager.
Mascherano said: “He is a player that I have faced many times with the U-20s and U-23s for Venezuela. He is a player who has the ability to play in various positions in the midfield, he can provide different options. We brought him because we like him, I think he can contribute from midfield and going forward.”
Club career | Apps | Goals | Assists |
Deportivo Lara | 61 | 6 | 1 |
Sampdoria (loan) | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Sampdoria U-20s (loan) | 14 | 1 | 3 |

Although Segovia’s out-right goalscoring and assist numbers don’t make for the most convincing of readings, the 21-year-old will be joining one of the best teams in MLS where the midfielder will have plenty of quality to work off.
But most importantly, Segovia will be joining Inter Miami already earmarked as the successor to Diego Gomez, who last season was one of Tata Martino’s most important players in the Chase Stadium side’s journey to Supporters’ Shield glory.
Segovia has big shoes to fill in replacing Diego Gomez
Gomez left Inter Miami for a club-record transfer this January to Brighton & Hove Albion, with the Paraguay international becoming the first former Heron to play in the Premier League after making his debut last weekend against Manchester United.
And for Segovia, the Venezuela international will know he has big shoes to fill in replacing Gomez, who was one of Inter Miami’s best players last season and a real weapon in both the midfield and the attack for the Florida franchise.
Indeed, the midfielder linking up with the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets will work wonders for the youngster’s development, and Segovia will want to take his game to new levels in new surroundings going into next season.
