Inter Miami have seen a number of big-name players leave the club this January, with Matias Rojas’ departure the most surprising.
The Paraguay international only joined the Florida franchise last March as a free-agent with Rojas quickly asserting himself as a top attacking threat for Inter Miami alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, with the versatile forward giving the Herons plenty of options on their way to Supporters’ Shield glory.
Despite a number of impressive performances, Rojas left Inter Miami this January to join Argentina giants River Plate, with fans left angry at the Chase Stadium side for allowing the South American forward to leave so soon after joining.
And it hasn’t taken long for Rojas to quickly establish himself as a star player for River Plate in Argentina.

Matias Rojas lauded after scoring on River Plate debut
The Argentine Primera Division kicked off last night with River Plate travelling to Platense, with the South American giants going down early with the score still 1-0 heading into the final ten minutes before Rojas emerged as the hero for the visitors with a powerful header to rescue a point.
As per TyC Sports, Rojas was a ‘revelation’ for River Plate in their result last night away in Vicente Lopez, with the 29-year-old attacker already showing Inter Miami what they’re missing out on having let the forward leave for nothing this January.
Although Inter Miami have signed Tadeo Allende from Celta Vigo to replace Rojas, the Paraguay international could end up being a big loss for the Herons heading into the 2025 MLS season given how good the winger was last year for the Florida franchise.
Indeed, Rojas was lauded by Kieran Gibbs last season as one of Inter Miami’s best signings in recent memory, and having now lost the winger, the Herons have to live with their decision to allow the Paraguayan to depart for River Plate.
How good was Matias Rojas for Inter Miami really?
Rojas’ time at Inter Miami was short but sweet, with the former Corinthians star playing just 20 games for Tata Martino as the Herons won the Supporters’ Shield title before suffering a shock exit from the MLS play-offs.

Games played | 20 |
Goals | 9 |
Assists | 2 |
And as per Rojas’ stats for the year, the Paraguay international gave a good account for himself in Florida, with the winger hitting nine goals and two assists in all competitions for Inter Miami in 20 matches.
Retaining Rojas would have been worth the investment for Inter Miami this season, yet with the forward already thriving with River Plate, the attacker might have made a smart decision for his career given the size of the Argentine side.
