It’s very rare for Lionel Messi to be greeted with anything but jubilation, however, his experience during Inter Miami’s pre-season game with Club American was very different.
Messi played a part in helping Inter Miami win the game against their Mexican opponents on penalties but this was not the reason for a hostile reception.
Messi recently celebrated the anniversary of his nation’s recent World Cup win and Messi’s three-finger celebration incensed the Mexican fans in attendance.
The celebration is a nod to the amount of World Cups his nation has won, reminding Mexican fans they are yet to win the tournament, but the treatment Messi received has angered teammate Federico Redondo.

Redondo angered by Messi reception
The love for Messi is clear to see by fans and players alike who are in awe of the magician’s ability on a soccer field.
Messi was named the MLS MVP for 2024, showing that his powers are far from waning despite now being 37 years old.
The impact of the Argentine is felt further afield than the soccer pitch as well with the record-holding Ballon d’Or winner Messi being praised by Steph Curry as well.
Messi’s Inter Miami teammates are full of praise for the Argentine and Redondo spoke out against the tough reception the superstar received from the Mexican supporters.
He said: “I think that in all of Latin America, perhaps out of resentment or something else, the only country that doesn’t enjoy watching Leo is Mexico.”
He added ahead of a meeting with Universitario de Peru on Wednesday: “Peru is going to enjoy the party and how great it is to see the best player in the world. There is no reason to treat the best player in the world like this. It is a shame that we cannot enjoy his magic.”
Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami future
Inter Miami are in discussions with Messi over a new contract but a new deal is yet to be agreed on.
Messi has been heavily linked with an eventual Barcelona return but an Inter Miami future appears positive.
Manager Javier Mascherano already looks to be planning for a future without his former Barcelona teammate with the addition of young talent.
Inter Miami will be keen to keep Messi for not only his ability on the pitch but also for what he provides to those around him.
Youngster Santiago Morales recently revealed what Messi was teaching him in training, showing that the Argentine is having a major impact in passing on his wisdom to the next generation.
