Javier Mascherano has wasted no time in putting his stamp on the Inter Miami squad, but he looks set to miss out on a former LA Liga rival.
The Herons have signed striker Tadeo Allende and midfielder Telasco Segovia in recent weeks, adding some much-needed quality to the squad.
However, Inter Miami were dealt a Neymar blow with the superstar looking likely to return to one of his former clubs.
It now appears they could be about to miss out on another star name with a former World Cup-winning defender closing in on a new club.

Monterrey in ‘advanced talks’ with Sergio Ramos
There was no hiding the fact that Inter Miami was desperately seeking some defensive cover when Mascherano took over as manager.
The team conceded 49 goals in their 34 MLS regular season games last season, something that ultimately cost them as they crashed out of the MLS playoffs to Atlanta United.
Inter Miami face a tough Club World Cup challenge this summer and one former defensive target could face up against them.
Sergio Ramos is reportedly in advanced talks with Mexican club Monterrey FC over completing a move as a free agent. The former World Cup winner has been without a side since leaving Sevilla and it now appears a link-up with Lionel Messi is unlikely.
Missing out on the experienced defender and serial winner who won five Ligas, four Champions Leagues, four Spanish Super Cups, four Club World Cups, three European Super Cups and two Copa del Reys with Real Madrid is a major blow for Inter Miami.

Inter Miami’s defensive reinforcements
While Inter Miami appear to have missed out on the signing of Ramos, Mascherano has been busy building his defense.
The Herons secured a deal for Gonzalo Lujan, who is a versatile defender who can play as a full-back or centre-back if needed.
A deal between Inter Miami and Maxi Falcon was also agreed upon, the no-nonsense defender will add a tough approach to last year’s leaky backline.
They have also added goalkeeping reinforcements by welcoming back the returning Oscar Ustari and newcomer Rocco Rios Novo, who has experience with Atlanta United.
Inter Miami face a tough New York City FC side in their opening MLS game, their defenders will need to be on top form.
