Raphael Varane is reportedly still in talks to join a European club in what could be a major blow for Inter Miami’s chances of landing the defender.

The 31-year-old centre-back remains a free-agent after leaving Manchester United at the end of last season, with Inter Miami reportedly interested in signing the former France international.

A FIFA World Cup champion and four-time UEFA Champions League winner with Real Madrid, Varane would be quite the superstar addition for Inter Miami this summer, especially with the Herons in the market for a new central defender.

Yet hopes of signing Varane are now quickly fading.

Inter Miami-linked Varane still in transfer talks with Como 1907

According to Fabrizio Romano, Como 1907 remain in talks to sign Varane, indicating that Inter Miami could be about to miss out on the defender, with the journalist posting: “Negotiations continue between Como and Raphael Varane over free transfer. Como are pushing, as exclusively revealed.”

Given the ambition the newly promoted Serie A side are showing this summer, Varane could be tempted with a move to Italy if the former United defender’s demands are met and Inter Miami are unable to match Como’s overall package.

Indeed, Varane is at an interesting crossroads in his career given how good the 31-year-old defender still is having starred for Madrid, France and United for the best part of a decade.

Yet with Como still in talks with Varane, Inter Miami’s chances of signing the iconic centre-back are fading by the day, and the Herons need to make a decision on their interest in the defender sooner rather than later.

Herons need to go for broke in signing Varane this window

Inter Miami’s interest in signing Varane seems to have taken a backseat in recent weeks, with the Herons focused more on matters on the pitch with the summer window yet to officially open in MLS.

Yet that does not mean that Inter Miami can just sit around and waiting for something out of their hands to occur in their bid to sign Varane, with action needed now to land the defender.

The former France international is an exceptional player and a superstar name who would fit Inter Miami’s new culture, and if the Herons want to make a statement this summer, signing Varane would do just that.
