'Getting closer': Luis Suarez shares when Lionel Messi could return for Inter Miami from injury

Luis Suarez has given an update on Lionel Messi’s return from injury after the Inter Miami captain missed a third game since returning from the Copa America.

The Argentine superstar twisted his ankle in the final against Colombia earlier this month, with Messi since being seen wearing a protective boot and missing the last three Inter Miami games as a result.

Whilst the injury isn’t believed to be a serious one, Messi’s latest issue has seen his absence from Inter Miami now extend to eight games, though the Herons have responded in incredible fashion, winning seven of these fixtures.

And Suarez has now given an update on Messi’s injury after last night’s Leagues Cup win against Club Puebla.

Suarez hints that Messi is ‘getting closer’ to returning from injury

Speaking to the press after last night’s 2-0 win, Suarez suggested that Messi is close to coming back to action with Inter Miami, with the forward currently working inside on his fitness having returned to light training.

With Inter Miami flying in MLS action and now Leagues Cup, there is no rush to bring Messi back, who will be crucial to the Herons in the final third of the season with the play-offs now on the horizon.

And for Suarez, the Uruguay striker seems to think that Messi will be back in action soon for Inter Miami, with the 37-year-old attacker the final piece of the puzzle for the Herons if they’re to dominate North America.

Suarez said when asked about Messi’s recovery: “Everyone knows how committed Leo is to this club, with his national team and his desire to be on the field. But as the days go by he is getting closer to his return to the field, which is where we all want to see him.”

Inter Miami could be unstoppable when Messi returns

As mentioned, Inter Miami have thrived without Messi since the Copa America, with Tata Martino’s side winning seven of their last eight games and taking a real grasp on the Supporters’ Shield race in the process.

And once Messi back and fully fit, there’s a real chance that Inter Miami could become an unstoppable force in MLS and Leagues Cup, with both titles now up for grabs after last night’s win against Puebla.

The Argentine star will be desperate to return to the field after missing so much action for Inter Miami, yet based on Suarez’s comments, Messi could be back sooner than we know it for the Florida franchise.
