A Liga MX star has revealed his dream of facing Lionel Messi and Inter Miami in this summer’s Leagues Cup tournament.

The Herons are the reigning holders of the competition after Messi introduced himself to America in the only way the Argentine knows how, by winning Inter Miami their first piece of silverware in his first few weeks with the club.

Although Messi will miss Saturday’s tie against Tigres, Inter Miami have started the 2024 competition in good form with a 2-0 win against Club Puebla, with Luis Suarez on the scoresheet for the Florida franchise.

And a Liga MX forward has stated his dream of facing Messi this summer.

Ramiro Sordo shares ‘dream’ of facing Inter Miami’s Messi this summer

Speaking to TJ Sports, Santos Laguna winger Ramiro Sordo revealed how he hopes to face his idol Messi this summer in Leagues Cup, with the forward just missing out on taking on the Argentine having left Newell’s Old Boys weeks before they faced Inter Miami in pre-season.

Given the immense reputation Messi has in soccer, it’s no real surprise that players such as Sordo are eager to take on the 37-year-old, who for many professionals would be considered a role model or even their idol.

And for Sordo, Messi is exactly that, with the Argentine winger coming through the same club as the Inter Miami star began his career at and now faced with the chance of facing the Herons in Leagues Cup with Santos.

Sordo said when asked if Messi was the player he wanted to face the most: “Yes, Messi, it is my dream to play against him. I could have played him in a friendly but I had already moved here, but yes, my dream this summer is to be able to face Messi. I hope we can progress so we can make it happen.”

Rivals will hope Messi features in Leagues Cup this year

With Messi out injured with an ankle problem, there’s a real chance that Inter Miami could go all the way once again in Leagues Cup and not have their star attacker play a single minute in the competition.

Yet for players like Sordo, they will want to see Messi back in action during this tournament given just how big the forward is and how huge a draw the 37-year-old is for rivals and fans.

Indeed, Messi’s fitness needs to be a priority for Inter Miami this summer, yet if the attacker can make a cameo or two, the Argentine could declare himself fit to play if there is a chance to return to the pitch.
