Inter Miami right-back Marcelo Weigandt has shared his current opinion on now having to compete for his position after the emergence of a teammate.
The Argentine defender joined the Herons earlier this year after the surprise trade of former captain DeAndre to FC Cincinnati, with Weigandt emerging as a solid replacement having arrived on loan from Boca Juniors.
With Weigandt recently sharing his love for Inter Miami manager Tata Martino, the defender has quickly made a home for himself in Florida, with the defender playing a key role in the Chase Stadium side’s incredible form in 2024.
And Weigandt has now revealed how he feels about a teammate now coming for his spot.

Weigandt in awe of Ian Fray’s comeback for Inter Miami
Speaking to the press ahead of Saturday’s Leagues Cup tie with Tigres, Weigandt revealed his respect and admiration for Ian Fray, who earlier this summer returned from his third ACL injury to thrive in the right-back spot whilst the Argentine was out through injury.
With Inter Miami now having two great players for the role, competition between Fray and Weigandt has been fierce in who will making the starting XI, yet the on-loan Boca star is relishing the battle with his young teammate.
Weigandt said when asked how he feels about competing with the right-back position with Fray: “The competition makes me very happy. He’s suffered with a lot of injuries, but he’s come back, developed, and he keeps getting better.
“In my opinion, this is healthy competition, I was happy he was able to overcome so many injuries, it means we both have fair competition, especially with me and Ian talking a lot, we help each other. The right-back position is good for both of us, it means we compete and make an effort every week to be in the starting XI, and I hope he continues to develop.”

Praise for Fray is a testament to Inter Miami youngster’s drive
Having returned this year after suffering a third consecutive ACL injury, Fray’s story has been nothing short of incredible, with the 21-year-old defender not only coming back to professional soccer, but thriving with the best team in America.
And praise for Fray is more than deserved, with the Jamaica international a player with an incredible amount of quality and potential who could one day become a real star for Inter Miami if he can stay fit and healthy.
Indeed, Fray’s story is arguably the best of the entire season in MLS, and the fullback competing with Weigandt for a starting XI position is something few Inter Miami fans would have predicted at the start of the year.
