Angel Di Maria has officially made a decision on his future amid reports that Inter Miami are interested in signing the Argentine veteran.
Inter Miami have been linked with signing Di Maria this summer, with reports suggesting that the former PSG and Manchester United star would return his native Argentina before moving to Florida at the start of 2025.
With Di Maria officially a free-agent at this summer’s Copa America having seen his contract with Benfica expire, many expected the former Real Madrid man to go through with his plan of returning to Argentina before signing for Inter Miami.
Yet Di Maria’s future has now taken an unexpected turn.
Di Maria signs contract extension with Benfica despite Inter Miami interest
As per Benfica’s official channels, Di Maria has re-signed with the Portuguese giants for an extra year, ending Inter Miami’s hopes of landing the winger in the January transfer window.
Di Maria told Benfica’s official website on signing a new contract with the club: “I’m happy to stay at Benfica for another year, to be able to continue wearing this shirt, I hope it’s possible to achieve the titles that we didn’t manage last season.”
With Inter Miami already boasting the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, adding Di Maria to the mix would have been nothing short of incredible heading into the 2025 MLS season.
However, with the former Argentine international opting to remain with Benfica, the odds of Di Maria heading to Florida now seem slim, with the forward clearly confident in his abilities to keep playing in Europe.
Di Maria could still end up joining MLS in 2025
Although Di Maria won’t be heading to Inter Miami this summer or in the January transfer window, there’s still a likely chance that the attacker could make the move to MLS in 2025.
As we know, Di Maria is far from calling time on his career, with the forward more than good enough to star in Europe with Benfica for another year before deciding on his next career move next summer.
And MLS and Inter Miami could be an option for Messi’s former international teammate, with Chase Stadium an ideal landing spot for a player as recognized or as good as Di Maria.
