Lionel Messi has been out with injury for almost a month, with the forward last playing for Inter Miami at the start of June.

The 37-year-old attacker twisted his ankle in the Copa America final for Argentina, with Messi still recovering from this injury having not yet returned to full Inter Miami training.

With Messi expected to be out for another few weeks, the wait for the attacker’s return is one that Inter Miami fans must endure a little bit longer, with the Argentine himself keen to return to action before the September international break.

And Inter Miami have been seemingly dealt another injury blown this morning surrounding Messi.

Messi absent from training ahead of Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup tie

As per journalist Jose Armando, Messi is still yet to return to training on the pitch with Inter Miami, with Armando writing: “Lionel Messi is still doing gym work and is not with his teammates at this morning’s training session. Jordi Alba is training without problems after the blow in the match against Toronto.”

With Messi still working in the gym, the timeline for the Inter Miami star’s return now feels as confusing as it was when the attacker initially picked up his ankle injury last month.

Indeed, the former FC Barcelona superstar has been a big miss for Inter Miami in recent weeks, even with the Herons enduring a fantastic run of form which has seen just two defeats since the Argentine left for the Copa America.

And with Messi again absent from training, fans will rightly be worried about when the forward is actually returning, with the lack of communication between the club and supporters becoming a problem.

Fans have to be hopeful that Messi will be back this month

With Messi last kicking a ball for Inter Miami two months ago, it’s understandable why fans will be frustrated with the seeming lack of developments surrounding the Argentine’s return.

However, given Messi’s age and the nature of the injury the attacker suffered at the Copa America, it’s easy to see why Inter Miami are being more than cautious with when their star player returns to action.

As we know, Inter Miami are heading into the final third of the regular MLS season, and keeping Messi as fit as possible until the post-season will be huge in the Herons going all the way to MLS Cup in the play-offs.
