Inter Miami are the most recognizable MLS team on the planet after Lionel Messi’s arrival last year, yet the Herons have been home to superstars beforehand.
Gonzalo Higuain and Blaise Matuidi were part of Inter Miami’s first-ever roster back in 2020, with the Florida franchise also having the likes of Lewis Morgan, Julian Carranza and current no. 1 Drake Callender on the payroll.
Ever since being founded by David Beckham, Inter Miami have always been a franchise that have strived to break the mold of modern MLS clubs by looking to sign superstar names, with Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez since joining the Herons after Messi.
And another huge name in soccer has revealed that he was once approached to join Inter Miami.

Mario Gotze shares Inter Miami transfer approach way before Messi
Speaking to Transfermarkt, Germany international Mario Gotze revealed that Inter Miami once approached to sign the former Borussia Dortmund superstar four years ago, with the playmaker instead opting to remain in Europe.
Gotze is most remembered for scoring the winning goal at the 2014 FIFA World Cup against Messi’s Argentina, with the now-32-year-old since enjoying a successful career having played for the likes of Bayern Munich, PSV Eindhoven and Eintracht Frankfurt.
Yet things could have been different had Gotze opted to head to MLS as a 28-year-old, with the Bundesliga star revealing that there was an approach from Inter Miami way before Messi had joined the club.
Gotze said when asked if Inter Miami had approached him before: “No, that was the case. I was 28 back then, and my contract in Dortmund ran out. I was in touch with the guys at Inter Miami. We spoke about it then, and it was a possibility.”

Gotze could still make the move to MLS in his career
With Gotze impressing in the Bundesliga with Frankfurt, there’s still time for the former Dortmund star to make the move to the United States in his career, and Inter Miami would, of course, be a sensible option.
The Herons were clearly big fans of Gotze having left Dortmund back in 2020, with the Germany icon viewed as a potential superstar signing for Inter Miami’s first year in MLS.
And at 32, Gotze could still make the move to the United States, with Inter Miami an ideal landing spot for the attacking midfielder if the Florida giants were to make another approach for the German.
