Inter Miami have been the best team in MLS this year, yet the hunt for silverware in 2024 still continues for the Herons.
Tata Martino’s side this week crashed out of Leagues Cup with a 3-2 loss against the Columbus Crew, with Inter Miami’s best chance of getting their hands on a trophy coming via the Supporters’ Shield, as well as MLS Cup.
With Lionel Messi working his way back from injury, it won’t be long until Inter Miami have a squad needed to go all the way in their quest to win a domestic double just 12 months on from finishing near the bottom of the MLS standings.
And former defender Kieran Gibbs has made an interesting comparison between Inter Miami and the great Sir Alex Ferguson and his Manchester United teams.

Inter Miami’s late wins and mentality similar to Manchester United under Ferguson
Speaking on the Inter Miami Weekly Show, the pundit made the claim that Inter Miami’s comeback wins this season and their attitude to never give up reminds Gibbs on Premier League giants United under Ferguson, who became famous for winning no late on in games.
Gibbs said on Inter Miami’s comeback wins: “It happens with teams sometimes that they get their stroke of luck and come back into a game, and they do it two or three times and it suddenly becomes part of their identity almost.
“You look at Manchester United in the 1990s and early 2000s, they were renowned for never giving up and scoring last-minute goals and always finding a way, there’s a skill to that, there’s an art to that.
“I think the boys [Inter Miami] have learnt that from just playing this season and going through the ups and the downs as a team, the’ve got that belief in each other that they’ll find a way.”

Inter Miami need to use new mentality and legend to their advantage
Whilst Inter Miami are, of course, nowhere near as good as United during their peak under Ferguson, the Herons can use their newfound mentality and legend in MLS to create a real dynasty in the league.
As we know, Inter Miami are the favorites for MLS Cup and the Supporters’ Shield with just a handful of regular season games to go, with the Florida franchise having everything needed to create history.
And Inter Miami using their ability to strike fear into the hearts of opposing teams in winnings games late must be used to their advantage, with the Herons in an incredible position to forge something never seen before in MLS.
