Lionel Messi looks to keep remarkable tournament group stage record alive during Club World Cup

Inter Miami fans will be eagerly awaiting their return to action as excitement reached new levels over the last 24 hours following the FIFA Club World Cup draw.

The Herons will make their debut in the newly revamped tournament which will see the best club sides from around the world compete.

One man who will be looking to lead Miami to success in the tournament is Lionel Messi. New manager Javier Mascherano recently applauded his fellow Argentine international for the impact he has had on the team.

Messi will not be reunited with his former club Barcelona as they did not qualify for the tournament which will take place next summer in the United States.

The former Barcelona star will however be looking to keep up his amazing record in tournament group stages.

Messi’s eye-catching tournament record

Lionel Messi is a man who holds more records and achievements than many in world football could ever dream of, yet there’s one record which goes somewhat unnoticed.

We’re all well aware that he is the all-time leader for the most Ballon d’Or wins with eight, he has also won both the World Cup and Copa America.

Messi has a successful tournament record but is especially potent in group stages.

In his 21-year career, the midfield magician has yet to be knocked out in the group stage of any tournament. That’s some going when you think about the calibre of teams he has faced in his career.

Messi was recently named in the MLS Best XI, showing that he is still at the peak of his powers.

The Argentine will be hoping to continue his great group stage form at next summer’s Club World Cup.

Inter Miami and Messi face tough Club World Cup group

The Club World Cup draw took place in Miami on Thursday and Herons fans have reacted to their group.

David Beckham and Mascherano will have been watching eagerly to find out who they will face on home soil next summer.

The Herons were drawn in Group A and face some tough tests. Here’s a look at who they will play.

Inter Miami will open the tournament as the host team and play in the inaugural game of the Club World Cup against Al Ahly FC in Miami on June 15.

Lionel Messi and his teammates will be looking to progress to the knockout rounds to keep this unbelievable run going.
