Pep Guardiola believes Inter Miami star will be an ‘exceptional coach’– it’s not Lionel Messi

The Inter Miami first-team roster is littered with truly great soccer players – some of whom may potentially move into management in years to come.

New Herons boss Javier Mascherano recently took the managerial leap himself, taking the Argentina U20 job not long after retiring.

As the likes of Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Lionel Messi all near the end of their careers, they could also soon be taking their own steps into coaching.

With that being said, Pep Guardiola believes there is one Inter Miami player in particular who will shine in the world of management.

Pep Guardiola claimed Sergio Busquets will be an ‘exceptional coach’

Having won numerous titles in Spain, Germany, and England – there are much greater in terms of management when it comes to Guardiola.

The Spaniard’s endless list of achievements means he is the ideal candidate when it comes to pinpointing the next generation of top managers and Pep believes current Inter Miami midfielder Busquets falls into that bracket.

Speaking in 2023, Guardiola sang the praises of his former midfielder, following Busquets’ Barcelona departure:

“Busquets was the best, able to read everything that happens and anticipate situations. He didn’t move a lot, only in the center, but he could solve any problem with his brain. It was fascinating to work and learn with him. I said it in private but… I think he will be an exceptional coach.”

Sergio Busquets wishes to manage Barcelona

Currently 36 years old at the time of writing, Busquets still has a few years left in the tank at the top level.

The Spaniard was outstanding at times last season, with MLS expert Matt Doyle claiming Busquets was better than Lionel Messi in 2025.

Once the Spaniard eventually does slow down, though, he is very likely to go down the managerial route – telling La Vanguardia in 2023 that he would like to return to Barcelona as a coach one day:

“First I will finish my sporting career. Then I will get my coaching license. And of course I would like to try to coach here. I say try because although I think I have the knowledge and skills necessary for it, then you have to know how to transmit them.

“I know that it is not easy because you have 25 footballers under your charge, with their character, their problems and their way of seeing life. And your job is to help them in everything.”
