Inter Miami are looking light at the back as they begin preparations for the new MLS season under new manager Javier Mascherano.
The club has recently seen the departure of former centre-back Nicolas Freire who has left the MLS to join Argentinian side Independiente.
While Inter Miami has been linked with Nicolas Otamendi and numerous other defenders, they are yet to bring any new defensive cover in this offseason.
Mascherano recently signed Fafa Picault from the Vancouver Whitecaps, but once again he is an attacking addition. The club are in desperate need of some solid defenders especially as the Herons face a tough New York City FC in their opening game.

Freire had little chance to make Inter Miami impact
The Argentine defender joined Inter Miami at the start of 2024 on a season-long loan from his former Mexican side UNAM.
Freire was brought in for his solid leadership qualities as well as his ball-playing ability, sadly fans saw very little of this as he played just 14 games for the club.
The 30-year-old was ruled out for the remainder of the season in May after picking up an ACL injury. Freire’s Inter Miami teammates were devastated by the news.
His departure was a big loss for Inter Miami. While he spent most of his time out with an injury, Freire brought stability in the back four whenever he featured and the club will need to find a suitable replacement.

Beckham must help Mascherano find new defensive stars
Inter Miami conceded no fewer than 49 goals in their 34 regular season games last season despite finishing as Supporters Shield winners.
The Herons conceded two or more goals in 12 games last season, including a heavy 6-1 defeat to FC Cincinnati, something that needs to be addressed if they are to become MLS Cup champions.
Javier Mascherano has played down Inter Miami’s championship chances but he will be looking to impress in his first season.
Defender Franco Negri recently left the club and while Inter Miami edges closer to the signing of San Lorenzo’s Gonzalo Lujan they are in need of more than one new addition.
The Herons get their pre-season underway when they face Club America on January 19th.
