Javier Mascherano’s plans to reshape the Inter Miami squad are well underway.
The Argentine boss has already secured the free agent signing of Fafa Picault from Vancouver Whitecaps, with Tadeo Allende also expected to join Inter Miami.
With one attacker through the door and another set to be announced, it seems like Mascherano is now turning his attention to defense.
Nicolas Freire’s move to Independiente has left a gaping hole in the Herons backline, which has left David Beckham and co targeting a replacement – with Inter Miami reportedly keen on signing Gonzalo Lujan from San Lorenzo.
Having initially targeted a loan move for the defender, the Herons could now be able to sign the Argentina international on a permanent basis.

Inter Miami could sign Gonzalo Lujan for free
The Herons have made no secret of their desire to sign a defender, with Independiente’s Kevin Lomonaco attracting interest from Inter Miami as well as Lujan.
With that being said, it seems like Lujan is Miami’s top defensive target – especially following news that he could be available for free.
That is according to DiarioOle, who claim the 23-year-old could potentially join the Herons on a free transfer due to a dispute over his contract with San Lorenzo.
Lujan is reportedly owed $200,000 by his club which has led to him not turning up for the team’s first two sessions of pre-season.
The Argentine’s contract is said to include an agreement that allows him to leave for free if he does not receive the money by Monday, 01/06/25 – potentially meaning he could join Mascherano’s team as a free agent if the dispute is not resolved.
How could Inter Miami lineup with Lujan in 2025
Having scored 79 goals on their way to Supporters’ Shield glory, it was actually their defense that let Inter Miami down at times.
The Herons conceded 49 goals, the amount as 9th placed Atlanta United – suggesting Mascherano will have to tighten things up at the back in 2025.
With that being said, Lujan could be a very good addition to the Inter Miami backline, if a deal is struck.

The 23-year-old is very versatile, being able to play both center-back and right-back – meaning he could very likely slot straight into the right center-back role in 2025.
