Inter Miami have waved goodbye to one of their biggest fan favourites with Matias Rojas joining River Plate.

The Herons signed Rojas in April as a free agent, with additional options for the 2025 and 2026 campaigns.

However, a new agreement could not be reached between the Paraguayan and the club and he has now become the latest star to leave Chase Stadium.

Diego Gomez has joined Premier League side Brighton and Leo Campana has joined another MLS side in the New England Revolution.

Inter Miami has acted by bringing in former Vancouver Whitecaps star Fafa Picault, although they will need more.

However, replacing fan favourite Rojas is never going to be easy.

Fans unhappy following Rojas exit

Although it has been known for some time that Rojas was likely leaving Inter Miami the official announcement from the club was still greeted with frustration.

The 29-year-old was strongly involved under former head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino and made an immediate impact, recording five goals and three assists in 16 matches.

Despite this, the club chose to decline the two optional years of his contract, something that is even more frustrating to Inter Miami fans.

Responding to the club’s announcement on X one fan simply asked: “Why?”

Another said: “This one really hurt.”

A further fan said: “Just wasted his career so sad.”

Some Inter Miami fans expressed their frustration about the lack of quality stars the side was bringing in as replacements.

One angrily posted: “Keep kicking out the best & bringing the worst.”

Another said: “Expectations: reinforce the team with really good players … Really: all the few good players leaving and the team is signing average/ bad players.”

It’s safe to say the Inter Miami fans are unhappy with Rojas’ exit.

Potential Rojas replacements

It was perhaps a shock that the attacking midfielder left Inter Miami. Rojas expressed his love for playing with the ‘best player’ in the world Lionel Messi.

Rojas did briefly spend some time out of the side with a sprained ankle but he played the majority of the season, moving him on seems an odd choice.

New manager Javier Mascherano has signed Bailey Sparks from the MLS SuperDraft who plays as an attacking midfielder, but replacing Rojas with the youngster seems fraught with danger.

The Herons have been closely linked with Ivan Leguizamon, the versatile attacker who was once dubbed the ‘jewel’ of San Lorenzo.

Inter Miami need to make some serious signings before the start of the new MLS season. Javier Mascherano’s side host New York City in their opening game.
