Inter Miami could miss out on former Argentina international after ‘remarkable’ revelation

Inter Miami’s January transfer plans are firmly underway, with the Herons squad already undergoing a number of big changes.

This week alone has seen Inter Miami fans question the departure of Matias Rojas, who left the Chase Stadium side just nine months after joining for a move to Argentina giants River Plate, with Leonardo Campana also being traded to the New England Revolution.

With just one Inter Miami signing so far in MLS veteran Fafa Picault, Javier Mascherano is yet to pull the trigger on a major transfer for the reigning Supporters’ Shield champions despite a number of exciting links.

And one such player could now be set to snub a move to Inter Miami even after weeks of rumors.

Inter Miami target Marcos Rojo could sign new Boca Juniors contract

According to Pasion Futbol, Marcos Rojo could now be set to sign a new contract with Boca Juniors after a ‘remarkable’ transformation in form at the end of the year, with the defender also returning to the Argentine giants for pre-season in an impressive physical condition.

Rojo has been linked with a move to Inter Miami for some time with Messi even once trying to persuade his former Argentina teammate to make the switch to Chase Stadium last year, an attempt that ultimately failed for the Herons.

Yet heading into 2025, there was a real chance that Rojo could make the move to Inter Miami, though the defender’s recent form for Boca Juniors has seemingly led to a rethink from the South American titans about the center-back’s future.

Indeed, with Inter Miami allowing Nicolas Freire to return to his parent club at the end of last season, the need for a defender is great for Mascherano’s side, and Rojo would have been the dream signing for the Herons had a deal been reached.

What other defenders have Inter Miami been linked with this January?

Rojo might not be heading to Florida this month, but that doesn’t mean Inter Miami will end the January window empty-handed given how important a new defender or two is for Mascherano’s side.

Fullback Gonzalo Lujan has emerged as a target for Inter Miami in recent days, with former FC Barcelona center-back Marc Bartra also on Mascherano’s radar as a top defensive signing for the January market.

Indeed, Inter Miami know they need to add to their defense if they’re to go for silverware next season, and signing one or two top additions will be huge in their quest to add to last year’s Supporters’ Shield triumph.
