James Rodriguez has been on Inter Miami’s radar ever since the Herons were formed seven years ago in 2018.
The Colombia international is one of the biggest names in soccer and a player with a massive reputation in the Latin world having starred at FIFA World Cups and winning two UEFA Champions League titles with Real Madrid.
In recent years, though, Rodriguez’s career has hit a wall, with the 33-year-old playing for four clubs in the last three years and failing to find a real home for himself despite impressing for Colombia at last summer’s Copa America.
And the playmaker could now be about to take a step that could lead to Rodriguez finally joining Inter Miami.

Inter Miami target James Rodriguez ready to terminate Rayo Vallecano contract
According to AS, Rodriguez is willing to rip up his contract with Rayo Vallecano in order to secure a transfer this January, with the former Bayern Munich and Everton star struggling for form and regular minutes with the La Liga side.
As per the report, Inter Miami are in the hunt for Rodriguez with the attacking midfielder playing just seven games in all competitions for Rayo, who have seemingly grown frustrated with the superstar Colombia international.
James Rodriguez’s Rayo Vallecano stats | Games played | Goals | Assists |
La Liga | 6 | 0 | |
Copa del Rey | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Total | 7 | 0 | 1 |
With Inter Miami also linked with the likes of Paulo Dybala as Javier Mascherano also eyes Benfica attacker Angel Di Maria, the Herons would be within their right to target other forward-minded players with Rodriguez enduring such a tough year.
Indeed, although Rodriguez’s stats make for poor reading, the veteran playmaker joining a team where he will be a regular and a star player could be what’s needed to give the attacking midfielder a second wind in life, and Inter Miami can provide just that.

What has Rodriguez said in the past about Lionel Messi?
There is an alternate reality where Rodriguez was signed before Lionel Messi made the move to Inter Miami, such is the idea of the Colombian superstar one day making the move to Chase Stadium to play for the Herons.
Yet if Rodriguez does make the move this month, Messi will have yet another member of his fan club with him at Inter Miami, with the Rayo star previously stating that he prefers the Argentine over former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.
Indeed, Rodriguez seems destined to play for Inter Miami at some point in his career, and the La Liga maestro terminating his contract with Rayo could give the Herons the dream situation to bring the Colombian to Florida.
