'Always open': Tata Martino reveals if Inter Miami are looking to sign Mexico international

Inter Miami have had a quiet summer transfer window, with the Herons having just two days left to pull off some signings.

Despite links to Raphael Varana, James Rodriguez and Sergio Ramos, Inter Miami look set to end the window with just the one signing, that coming in the form of River Plate defender David Martinez.

With the Paraguay international already looking settled in Florida, Inter Miami have once again done well to recruit in a position that needed attention, with the Herons losing Nicolas Freire to a season-ending injury.

Yet manager Tata Martino has cleared up if Inter Miami will be moving for a Mexico international.

Martino doesn’t fully rule out Inter Miami move for Cesar Montes

Speaking to the press, the Argentina coach did not rule out Inter Miami’s chances of signing Cesar Montes, though Martino said that the center-back spot that needed filling has been achieved via Martinez.

Montes has been linked with Inter Miami with the Mexico international set to return to North America after just a few years in Europe, with MLS a possible landing spot for the Almeria defender.

And Inter Miami could be a potential home for Montes in the future, with Martino saying when asked about the rumors: “If you are asking what I think of Cesar, I have only positive things to say about him as a player and person.

“We are always open to transfers, but the left center-back spot we needed to fill to replace Nico [Freire] we did with David [Martinez]. If in the future, if a player comes like Cesar, he would be welcomed.”

Montes could be a January transfer target for the Herons

With Inter Miami running out of time to land Montes, the chances of the Herons signing the 27-year-old defender this summer feel slim, to say the least.

Yet the Mexico international heading to Inter Miami could well be an option for the Florida franchise in the January transfer market, where a new defender will be at the top of Martino’s to-do list in the winter window.

Indeed, Montes would be an outstanding central defender for MLS, and Inter Miami seems like an ideal fit given the Almeria star’s links to former Mexico manager Martino.
