Javier Mascherano was the week unveiled as Inter Miami’s newest manager, with the Argentine coach set for a busy off-season heading into 2025.
The former FC Barcelona defender reunites with Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba in Florida in his first club role as manager, with Mascherano saying he spoke to his former teammates before taking the Inter Miami job.
With Inter Miami already linked with the likes of Angel Di Maria heading into the January transfer window, Mascherano has some big plans in regards to what players he wants to bring in this off-season with the 2025 MLS campaign a few months away from starting.
And Mascherano already has his eyes set on a top Argentine talent, though there is a big problem already.

Inter Miami eye Brian Aguirre despite Boca Juniors’ stance
According to El Crack Deportivo, Mascherano is interested in bringing Argentina U-20 international Brian Aguirre to Inter Miami, though as per the report, Boca Juniors have no intention of letting the winger leave barely a year after signing the youngster.
Hailed by TyC Sports as a ‘Neymar-like’ talent, Aguirre is yet to fully establish himself at Boca despite arriving last January with quite a lot of excitement and a big transfer fee of $5m, with Inter Miami likely needing to pay double that if they’re to bring the 21-year-old to MLS.
Brian Aguirre’s 2024 Boca Juniors stats | Games played | Goals | Assists |
Liga Profesional | 19 | 3 | 1 |
Copa del la Liga | 13 | 1 | 1 |
Copa Argentina | 4 | 1 | 0 |
Total | 36 | 5 | 2 |
A player Mascherano knows well from his time managing Argentina’s U-20s, Aguirre fits the bill for what the Herons are looking for in an attacking signing this January, with Inter Miami also linked with Boca striker Miguel Merentiel.
Yet with the Argentine giants setting their stall out early regarding Aguirre, there seems to be a small chance of the youngster making the move to Florida this off-season, even with the likes of Mascherano and Messi being appealing factors for the winger.

Aguirre could be a target for Inter Miami later in 2025
With Boca keen to keep the Aguirre experiment going, the odds of Inter Miami landing the 21-year-old feel low heading into the January transfer window, with the South American titans eager to see if they can get more out of their marquee signing.
Yet for Inter Miami, Aguirre could remain a target well into 2025, where the forward could reappear on the radar in the summer transfer window if Mascherano is still intent on bringing his former Argentina U-20 star to Chase Stadium.
Indeed, Aguirre’s profile is an interesting one and one that will catch the eye of Inter Miami fans, and the forward could be excellent in MLS if he can learn the right lessons from Messi and Luis Suarez in the attack.
