Javier Mascherono’s plans are in full swing following his first signing as Herons boss.
As 2024 comes to an end, David Beckham and co have seemingly ended the year with a bang after Inter Miami secured the free agent signing of Fafa Picault from fellow MLS outfit Vancouver Whitecaps.
Having rejected advances from Austin FC to join the Vice City outfit, many would have been unsurprised at Picault’s desire to play with the likes of Lionel Messi – especially if you take a look at what he has previously said about the Argentine.

Fafa Picault is a big fan of Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi
Having racked up over 200 appearances in the MLS, Picault is no stranger to the impact Messi has made since his Miami arrival.
The 33-year-old was part of the Nashville SC side that lost out to Inter Miami in the 2023 Leagues Cup and has since reflected on what it was like playing against Messi and co.
Speaking to the LeBatardShow in 2023, he said:
“It’s nuts. It has been an amazing transition for the league. Obviously, on an individual level, you just want to enjoy those games. Seeing the type of player he (Messi) is it makes you want to compete. There are a lot more viewers and people watching, which makes you want to show them who you are as a player and show what your team can do.
“It’s been dope, he’s an amazing player and seems to be very humble. He’s achieved so much so it is great to step on the pitch with a guy like that.”
Fafa Picault could play back-up to Lionel Messi
Leo Campana’s move to New England Revolution means Picault’s versatility will be a welcome addition to Javier Mascherano’s squad.
Able to play anywhere across the frontline as well as a number ten, the former Nashville man will likely play back-up to Messi when he is not available – something which could be very important given the Argentine’s recent injury record.
Set to turn 38 in 2025, Messi is nearing the end of his career which will of course bring difficulties to his ageing body – Picault though could be the perfect backup.
18 goal contributions in 2024, suggest the Haiti international could make a real impact at the Chase Stadium whether that be alongside or behind Messi.
