Inter Miami are one month away from the start of the 2025 MLS season, with plenty to do before the opening game of the year.

A number of key players from Tata Martino’s squad last year have already departed with Matias Rojas, Leonardo Campana and Nicolas Freire all leaving Chase Stadium, with more big names in the squad expected to make for the exit.

Despite a mass exodus under new manager Javier Mascherano, there have been a number of exciting rumors surrounding the Herons, with James Rodriguez once again linked with a move to Inter Miami having left Rayo Vallecano this week.

And Inter Miami now look set to complete their second signing of the January transfer window.

Inter Miami reach $800,000 agreement for San Lorenzo defender Gonzalo Lujan

According to journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, Inter Miami have struck an agreement with Argentine club San Lorenzo for defender Gonzalo Lujan, who is set to become the second new addition of the Mascherano era of the Herons.

Merlo posted: “Gonzalo Lujan is Inter Miami’s new reinforcement. Between money and a debt owed by the player, San Lorenzo receives $800,000 for 40% of the transfer and keeps 60% of the economic rights for a future transfer.”

An Argentine youth international who has played under Mascherano, Lujan will add cover at right-back for Inter Miami with the 23-year-old defender also capable of playing in central defense as well as a right-midfielder if needed.

With the backline the most important area for Inter Miami to strengthen this off-season signing a player like Lujan for as little as $800,000 could be viewed as a steal in years to come for the Herons, especially if the fullback makes an immediate impact in Florida.

Who else does Mascherano want to bring to Inter Miami?

Mascherano’s reputation in soccer means Inter Miami could benefit once again from bringing in high-quality players for way below market value, as seen already with the pending addition of Lujan.

And this trend could be set to continue, with Inter Miami also interested in Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman as well as Benfica superstar and Argentina legend Angel Di Maria, who could be tempted to reunite with Lionel Messi.

Indeed, the signing of Lujan is a great step in the right direction for Inter Miami, and with pre-season starting soon, more additions will be welcome with at Chase Stadium heading into what could be a historic 2025 season for the Herons.
